Portuguese Citizenship Through a Parent

A person born outside Portugal with a Portuguese mother or father may be able to obtain Portuguese nationality of origin by registering the birth in Portugal or declaring the wish to be Portuguese. The service verifies the parent's Portuguese civil record, the applicant's full birth record and any parentage or name inconsistencies before payment.

Baseline evidence

  • Full foreign birth certificate showing parentage.
  • Apostille or other legalisation required by the approved plan.
  • Portuguese parent's civil birth registration, or sufficient details for it to be located.
  • Applicant identity document.
  • The current adult or minor 1C declaration, completed and signed in the required manner.

Why civil-status review matters

Parentage, marriage transcription, spelling and name changes can affect the evidence even when the family relationship seems straightforward. The system records each mismatch rather than silently altering a form entry.

English-language UK documents

The current adult 1C instructions say translations for English, French and Spanish documents are normally dispensed with unless required. Translation is therefore a reviewed document decision, not a default add-on.

Common questions

Is having a Portuguese parent enough for an automatic online decision?

No. The route still requires the correct civil records and formal declaration, and edge cases must be reviewed.

Does my parent need a paper Portuguese certificate?

Sometimes the registry can locate the parent's record from conservatória, year and registration details. The document plan records whether an online code, paper certificate or record reference is needed.
