You can record Portuguese ancestry beyond a grandparent and preserve the complete family chain. A distant Portuguese ancestor does not automatically create the standard direct grandchild route. The current law instead provides a specific naturalisation route for a great-grandchild with at least five years of legal residence in Portugal, while some families may be able to proceed sequentially through intermediate generations after Portuguese-qualified review.

Portuguese nationality attributed as nationality of origin takes effect from birth. That can sometimes allow an intermediate generation to become the Portuguese parent for the next application. This is a legal inference, not an automatic platform decision: each generation needs its own approved route, evidence and registration before the next step proceeds.
The platform lets you extend either branch indefinitely and labels each generation. It routes great-grandparent and earlier cases to counsel review rather than displaying a definitive eligibility result.
